Critical Vote Theory
We use the term Critical Vote Theory (CVT) to show that voting is more than a civic responsibility. It is a moral imperative. Voting ensures inclusion of the values of all citizens in the governing process. Protecting voting rights is also a moral imperative requiring individuals and organizations to fight the injustices brought by governments, institutions and other structures seeking to deny people their right to vote.

On October 28th, 2020, the Vanderbilt Divinity School's Kelly Miller Smith Institute on Black Church Studies joined the Kelly Miller Smith Family Foundation’s inaugural event, a virtual symposium, for social justice activists, advocates and supporters, presenting principles and strategies for social change that cross generations and disciplines. The symposium was sponsored in commemoration of what would have been Dr. Smith’s 100th Birthday.
